In the January edition of Golf Digest, you will find local golf course Heritage Plantation listed as one of the elite golf courses in America to hit the small ball. Golf Digest is the largest and most respected golf publication in the U.S. Golf Digest ranked Heritage Plantation as the 5th Best New Public Golf Course in the nation. “This is such an honor for Heritage Plantation. This elite ranking shows our members and staff at Heritage Plantation that we are dedicated to producing a first class product for Emerald Coast residents and vacationers to the area” said Jeff Marks Director of Golf. Golf Digest's panelists rated golf courses on their Shot Values, Design Variety, Resistance to Scoring, Memorability and Aesthetics. The 7,328 yard par 72 course located just north of Crestview on Highway 85 is designed by renowned course architect Bill Bergin and opened for play in May 2007. Three of the four courses rated higher than Bergin’s design were designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. and Jack Nicklaus, putting Bergin among names of some of the best golf course designers in the United States. According to Bergin, “This is one of the most challenging and beautiful courses in Florida. Set on rolling property with over 120 feet of elevation change, Heritage Plantation has a back tee course ratting of 77.3, but a much more modest slope rating of 133. In the morning or late in the evening as the sun is set at an angle to the pines, Heritage Plantation is as stunning as it is testing.” Marks, says “Bill Bergin did an outstanding job of using the natural elevation changes and blending its unique character into the course. His design makes our course unlike any in our area and it is more reminiscent of the Carolina Sand Hills golf courses. When golfers play Heritage, the number one comment that I have received is that Heritage gives you the feeling that you are playing golf in Colorado, North Carolina or Montana.” Owner Steve Riggs is extremely excited and humbled by the rating. “I am very proud of everyone involved at Heritage. Bill Bergin has done a spectacular job in the design and overseeing construction of the course. We also have had great course superintendents in Kevin Goolsby and Josh Hensley who put in long hard hours to get the course to where it is today. The maintenance crew also takes tremendous pride in what they do and their work product shows when golfers are on the course.
